French Battlefield Tour, July 2011
Trip to Northern France – 18 to 23 July 2011
Monday 18th.
Dover to Calais ferry. Ride to Dunkerque and onto Vimy Ridge. From there on to the campsite at Sailly-Le-Sec (follow link for info). The campsite is 110 miles from Calais, 23 miles from Amiens and 9 miles from Albert.

Tuesday 19th.
We will follow Itinerary One from “Major & Mrs Holt’s Battlefield Guide to the Somme”. This route starts at the town hall square in Albert, heads directly towards the German front line along the main axis of the 1916 attack before swinging north to follow the front line across the River Ancre and ends in Arras. This tour takes in Lochnagar Crater, Thiepval Memorial & Cemetery, The Ulster Tower, Newfoundland Memorial Park and Sheffield Memorial Park.
Wednesday 20th.
We will follow Itinerary Two from “Major & Mrs Holt’s Battlefield Guide to the Somme”. This route starts at the town hall square in Albert, turns east along the old 1916 front line of the British right flank, then heads north through the woods – Mametz, Bernafey, Trones, Delville and High – to the Albert-Bapaume Road at Courcelette. It takes in the 38th (Welsh) Division Red Dragon Memorial, Caterpillar Valley, the South African National Memorial & museum and the Tank Corps Memorial. It ends in Pozieres.
Thursday 21st.
Visit the P’tit Train Froissy-Dompierre via Proyart.
Ride to the second campsite – about 100 miles.

Friday 22nd.

This route starts at the Cloth Hall in Ypres, heads north-east towards the area of the October 1914 front line and the April 1915 gas attack, swings east and then south through the area of the 1917 Passchendaele offensive, the 1914 actions along the Menin Road and ends at the Menin Gate. It includes In Flanders Fields Museum, The Totemuhle, Tyne Cot Cemetery, the Hooge Crater Museum, Sanctuary Wood Museum and the Menin Gate.
Saturday 23rd.
Ride back to Calais(about 65 miles) for ferry to Dover.
